When Crime Pays

I graduated from high school in 2001. That was the year that my life started to change. I met back up with my childhood sweetheart, and I didn’t know how different he was, where he had been, or anything. I just assumed he was a good person.

Within the next couple of years, his true colors began to show. He became very abusive and controlling over me. I wasn’t allowed to see my family, go anywhere alone, or do anything. I was pretty much being held prisoner in my own home. One night he and his brother were using dope, and he told me I was going to do some. I was scared of what he would do if I didn’t do it, so I did it. That began to be the only way I could escape him. I would get high so I wouldn’t have to feel the beatings to come! My fear of him only grew. He became more and more violent.

His father was diagnosed with cancer and passed away in 2003. When his father passed away, the beatings came more frequently. He started to use meth, and it made him very paranoid. He would walk around carrying a gun all of the time. I never knew what he was going to do. I knew that at any moment, he would end my life. I was so terrified of him I didn’t know what to do. On September 27, 2003, he made me get into our car at gunpoint and told me he was going to kill me. He made me drive to his destination. The whole trip he told me how he was going to kill me, and that no one would ever find me. This was the longest three and a half hours of my life. I was doing so many drugs at once while going down the road, I just knew I would overdose. I tried to do as many drugs as possible because I didn’t want to have to wait for him to kill me. I just wanted it all to end! I couldn’t take it anymore because my body was so tired.

I remember asking God to take me, to let something happen to me so I could get away from him and all the pain. When we arrived at his destination, he wanted me to pull over at a gas station, and made me go into the store with him. While in the store he decided to shoplift and the cashier saw him.  The cashier called the cops, and the police arrived before we left. He was then arrested and taken into Police custody.

I then realized God had answered my prayer. That night made me realize that no matter where you’ve been or what you’ve done, God never turns his back on you. He is always there! When I got back home, my sister-in-law and my mother told me they had been praying for me. My life was saved because of the prayers from my family and me.
